Creating the Heart of the Village
At HPW Architecture, we’ve worked with holiday parks for many years, and one of our early projects was Sandy Balls in the New Forest. The site presented real challenges, particularly around vehicle circulation. We rationalised the traffic routes to improve movement across the park, increasing customer safety while creating a village hub, the heart of the holiday park.
Our design approach focused on smaller village style buildings housing the reception, equipment and bicycle hire, restaurant, and shop. We also reimagined the park entrance with a welcome building featuring a green roof, one of our first projects to use a natural roof. Local timber cladding paired with sedum created a contemporary rural aesthetic that sits harmoniously in the landscape.
The project also includes an events space outside the restaurant, designed to host everything from ice skating to seasonal markets, giving the park flexibility for the future.
By addressing existing challenges and future proofing the site, Sandy Balls remains a shining example of how thoughtful design can transform a holiday park into a vibrant destination.
